That's right.  The reason is because of their advertising budget.  They have 
the biggest in the industry.  They also have sports photography all wrapped 
up, so consumers see those big white Canon lenses and think they can do just 
as well with a Rebel and a cheap 75-300 lens.  Hell, they used that concept 
in at least one of their recent TV ads, showing some lady on the sidelines 
of a football (American) game photographing the players with kit lenses and 
producing Sports Illustrated cover shots.

Canon also produces co-op ads with retailers, allowing the retailer to put 
their store info on the last page of multiple-page newspaper insert ads. 
This helps retailers, but consumers often show up expecting all the items in 
the ad to be at the store when there are usually a bunch not carried by the 
store.  The retailer then often convinces the customer to buy something more 
expensive.

Canon appears to care less about quality than advertising and sales volume 
when it comes to consumer cameras.  Their pro stuff may be great, but their 
consumer stuff is often of lesser quality than that of Pentax, Nikon and 
others.
