Actually, I don't remember that. I entered the Pentax system world  
shortly after the introduction of the *ist DS, when the kit lens was  
the DA18-55 and the DA16-45 was the upgrade model. Fitting the FA-J  
18-35 as a kit lens on the *ist D sounds like "we need to get this  
out to market and this is the most appropriate kit lens we have on  
the shelf right now" kind of thing.

I still don't know why there's any confusion about that the mounts  
mean. Any mount with a "D" in its name means the lens was designed  
with the DSLRs in mind. The FA series pre-dated them and were  
designed for the film cameras. Format coverage is not relevant to  
mount designation since all the lenses cover the DSLR line, which is  
all Pentax is producing now.

Nikon and Canon have needed to designate format coverage with their  
mounts since they have continued to produce multiple formats. If  
Pentax starts to also produce a larger format digital camera based on  
the K-mount, they'll likely have a set of D series lenses that are  
marked with a designator for the larger format.
