Actually if the intent was for APS cameras only, the coverage could be reduced and the lens performance increased via more baffling, different optical designs, etc. jco

Exactly. Pentax no longer makes 35mm film SLRs, they're not testing DA lenses for use on them. The fact that these lenses are usable is a happy accident, not an intent.
