The Panasonic L1 does a much better job at presenting a progressive display of charge state than the Pentax K10D, and it doesn't have much in way of intelligence in the battery that I'm aware of.
With the K10D, when I see it flickering between half and full, I change battery if I'm working on a shoot where timing is critical. Otherwise, I just keep going until the camera stops functioning.
