Don't bother with Pentax TC's for this lens. The Pentax XL series won't fit either 300/4.5, and the other Pentax TC's are manual focus. Get a modern AF TC from a third-party vendor. You may have to mail-order one, evaluate it yourself, and return it if it doesn't meet your needs. I use a Kenko Teleplus 1.5x AF TC with the 300/4.5. At middling and close distances in good light it works fine. But it will make the lens fairly slow, and also the DOF from effective aperture of lens + TC screws up the bokeh. If you have to get a 2x and can't find a good one in AF, the option I suggest is the Vivitar 2x Macro Focusing TC. It is as good or better than any Pentax TC that will fit the 300/4.5, and has the useful advantage of built-in extension. Pentax is way behind the times in autofocus teleconvertors. But I guess the marketing folks at Pentax have the situation under control. -- John Mustarde - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
