Formatting gets the job done once the images are taken off (didn't  
lose any images last night, oddly enough, although there were some  
issues with file names being duplicated (last bad image on card 1  
shared a name with first good image on card 2, last bad on 2 shared a  
filename with first good image on card 3).

Actually, that is a good clue - that means the camera is screwing up  
at the point where it is incrementing its internal counter - or at  
least sometime AFTER writing but before incrementing.

Hmmmmm.

Of course the extended warranty ran out on 11/20
