You are generally correct, however: Ammunition not being available is no bar from firing any old firearm. One can always make the ammunition if one wants to, and it's usually a relatively trivial matter. I know, I've done it. Further, while ammo for certain antique firearms may not be mass produced and therefore commonly listed as "unavailable", it is almost always available from small producers. One example is the 45/120 cartridge used in some Sharps rifles.
The same is and will always be true for "unavailable" film formats - ammo for old cameras.
