I don't know how practical hauling a notebook around would be, but I just upgraded to the Nokia 6110 Navigator, uses the route66 software but you can load any 3rd party software you want, you only pay for the phone calls as the software uses the phones built in GPS, mine came with maps for the whole of South Africa but you can purchase maps for any country. You can do the route planning on the phone, with options of shortest or best route, or manually plan the route, has voice prompts so you don't even have to look at the screen. Only problems I've had are that the battery dosn't last long, have to charge it every 3 days and the calls aren't as clear as sony erricsson phones. YMMV
