Most people think chain guards and fenders are old fashioned, but really they are just expensive, if you leave them off the bicycle you can sell it a lot cheaper. If you use you bicycle as a toy (we will ignore the serious racering cycles where the issue is weight) you do not need them, but if you want to wear your good clothes when riding you have to go out and by them extra. In other words, bicycles intended as transportation have both fenders and chain guards, and the ladies version also have skirts so their skirts will not get caught in the spokes of the rear wheel.
