I believe it's basically an automatic autofocus-point-selection system. As you've no doubt found, sometimes it's difficult to get the autofocus to focus on what *you* want, rather than what the camera wants. For most family snapshooters, though, the desired focus point is most often a person's face, so if the camera can recognize the difference between a human face and other objects in the scene, there's a pretty good chance that it's found an appropriate object on which to focus. I'd guess it's more appropriate for point-n-shoot cameras than SLR's, though I haven't tried it myself.
