I don't know if this will work on a Mac, I expect it would. I use a gmail account with POP forwarding as my mail server. Gmail filters out people that I have decided don't deserve me by both email address and by name in the message body. This catches both original messages and (most of the) replies. Gmail then forwards the rest to me, and I can use a standard email program for email, rather than a web based interface which I really dislike. Gmail also has a very effective spam filter, so spam is quite well controlled. For personal and business mail, I still have an account via my ISP, so I'm not concerned about my stuff sitting on Gmail's server forever.
