They could do the conversion from CCD pixels to TIFF/JPEG pixels (interpolation) in the hardware on the way to the memory device, though, so memory might not change. And, just to add insult to injury, you now have three separate light paths that must be kept perfectly aligned with each other and the main, shared part of the optical system.
