Yes, yes, and yes. I use the grip all of the time. I wouldn't want to  
be without it. You'll probably get at least 700 shots, even with  
chimping, although I rarely count and almost never exhaust both  
batteries before replacing them. The battery gauge only reads voltage  
from the battery currently in use, but you can set menu options to  
use both batteries  or one followed by the other. Doesn't seem to  
make any practical difference. I have it set to use both. I sometimes  
shoot handheld with the A400/5.6, and it balances rather nicely.  
Wouldn't want to try it without the grip. It's not just balance  
either. It's having more camera to hang onto. Finally, and most  
importantly, it's great for vertical shooting. You get another set of  
control wheels, a green button and a shutter release on the grip, so  
you don't have to be a contortionist to shoot vertical. I love it.
