Hello David, I use the grip most of the time. Yes, I think it helps balance my Sigma 100-300/4 EX lens better than without it. If I had the choice again, I would get the grip.
As for battery strength, Pentax does not have the kind of battery that can give you precise measurement as to remaining charge. However, I shoot lots of wedding and find for them, that I don't chimp much. I get somewhere in the 600+ range of shots with just one battery. I actually have 3 but find the battery life to be quite good.
