Kind of a "best of both worlds" solution for you might be a Wimberley 
Sidekick and a really good, big ball head like a Kirk or something.

the Sigma 50-500 isn't listed in the compatibility chart but if you call 
the customer service number they can tell you if it will work.

I use the sidekick with my darkside 500/4 and couldn't be happier.
