David Savage and Carl G sent me screen shots of my photo.net page and
alerted me to the fact that non-subscribers don't see the same nice,
clean page that subscribers see. I wrote to Josh, the photo.net site
director, and told him I wasn't pleased. I included the URLs and
screen shots. Here is Josh's reply.

Rick and Paul,

I'm replying to the two of you together because you wrote me at
virtually the same time regarding the same issue. You can pass this
along to the pentax mailing list if you like. [EMAIL PROTECTED] is the
address that any replies should be directed to.

A few things to know:

1. Yes, non-subscribers see more ads on the site than subscribers.

2. International viewers see different ads than N. American viewers,
this has to do with the different ad providers we use. A N. American
company doesn't want to advertise in Germany and vice versa.

3. From the screenshots that were included with Paul's email, someone
is seeing ads that they shouldn't be seeing. Flashing/jumping "you are
a winner" ads should not be on photo.net.

Now, there are a couple reasons that could be the cause of #3:

A. If only one or two people are actually seeing flashing/jumping ads,
then their computers may be infected with spyware.

B. There may have been a "bait and switch" pulled on the site.
Sometimes an advertiser will present one ad for approval that will get
through our filters, then switch it with another ad when they think we
aren't paying attention. This is a particular problem with
international ads. Probably because the crap companies know we are
based in the USA and won't catch on as quickly.

C. Full screenshots (including the URL bar of your browser) are needed
to get rid of these ads. We need to know where on the site they are
showing up. Copying the link that they are trying to send you to is
also useful (if you know how to do that without actually visiting
their site).

Any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
