Second curtain synch means the flash is fired just before the second curtain closes. The idea is, that the manual exposure, before synch, will probably blur to the rear of any action taking place, whereas with first curtain synch, that blur is in the direction of motion. Let's say something is moving right to left. * is the flash, and ------ is the (blured) manual exposure.
