Your presumption that a 5 year old digital camera is not useful
is false though. Just because a newer, faster, whatever piece of
equipment hits the market, it does not render the predecessor
useless.
Since digital cameras have no moving parts (other than the
shutter button), there is a good chance they will outlast many
of the presently made mostly plastic film cameras. Of course,
only time will tell, it really is impossible to predict.
