My experience is both the Nikon D80 and Pentax K10D AF best when
locked to the centre point. Both will hunt and be somewhat random when
the camera selects AF points, but the Nikon will do this less. AF is
noticably better on the D80, but I wouldn't call the K10D bad. Just
less good (Try most any Pentax AF film body to experience bad AF).

Note that a K10D and Sigma 17-70(My choice for good but cheapish K
mount zoom) will be cheaper than a D80 and the Nikon 18-55 (which is
greatly inferior to the Pentax 18-55 in handling and build, but
similar optically)
