One of the best preserved American Revolutionary War fortifications is about 20 miles from where I sit. I had to be in Groton CT so I decided to visit Ft Griswold. It's not as spectacular as some 17th and 18th century fortifications but it overlooks a strategic river where the US Navy has had major facilities since it's beginning. There have been a number of later fortifications built in the same general area but all kindly spared the original fort. This is a photograph of a slightly restored escape rout through the earthwork walls of the original fort. It didn't help the defenders much in 1781 when the British burnt New London and massacred the fort's defenders. (Well that's how it's recorded by the surviving defenders anyway). Anyway the British won.
