Paul, a bolt hole (bolthole, bolt-hole) is the entrance to an escape 
route.  The term doesn't seem to be used much anymore, but I believe was 
somewhat common during at least the hundred years or so leading up to 
WW2.  In particular, it was very commonly used during the period of the 
US Civil War and the US expansion westward in the late 1800s.
