NYC subways can be plenty packed at rush hour. I used to take the E train from the Port Authority bus terminal to 53rd and Lex. The stop before the Port Authority was Penn Station, so the train would be packed when it got to the PA on 42nd Street. I sometimes took a running start at the open door and just jammed my way in.
