follow on to Paul's comment: If you're using Lightroom, all editing is done in the equivalent of a ProPhoto RGB colorspace with 16bit per channel. You set the output file format, bit depth and colorspace conversion when exporting a finished image, in the Export dialog.
If you choose to edit a photo in an external editor while managing it in Lightroom, you set up the export parameters for rendering to use with the external editor in Lightroom's Preferences under the "External Editing" tab. This enables Lightroom to auto-render an RGB file with the correct colorspace, bit depth and file format for whatever editor you choose to work with.
