Camera Raw v3.x implemented major improvements, particularly for  
batch processing, over the v2.x generation along with CS2's Bridge  
workflow application, if you want to stay in a Photoshop + Camera Raw  
processing workflow. Camera Raw v4.x along with the CS3 generation of  
Bridge as well provide major improvements. Photoshop CS2 and CS3 both  
perform better even on the same hardware as what you've got now. It  
really is time for an update.

But I find Lightroom to be as capable as either and the UI is more to  
my liking. The image management facilities and easy processing of  
huge numbers of files at once is very useful, and its non-destructive  
editing model saves disk space overall. Aperture does a similar job  
on the same order as Lightroom ... some like its tools better.
