One again, my LX needs repair... This will be the 5th repair trip in the
last two years, so MTBF is just under 5 months.

This time is it is the mirror lock up function / self timer that is not
working. The mirror goes only half way up when the level reaches it's full
swing. The self timer, well, just plain does nothing....

These things worked OK when it came back from Colorado a few months ago,
but the MLU got stiff when using it for some early morning / low light
shooting in September. Now, with just light use in the last few weeks,
these functions have broken down.

I'm tempted to bring it to a local repair place in Grand Rapids. They guy
there has done some good work for me with lenses, and the flat $140 or $160
that Pentax charges, plus the 6 - 8 weeks repair time (including shipping,
estimates, etc.) are too much. I bought this camera just over two years
ago, and it has easily spent half a year in the shop! Not to mention that
the original $600 purchase price has been match by repair costs.

I've heard the opinion that only Pentax can repair an LX - any thoughts on
the wisdom (or lack thereof) of taking it to someone else?

TIA -
