Godders is the PDML authority on Lightroom, but I'll  share my thoughts.

In Lightroom 2.0 they will take it a little further. Allowing to do a
bit more of the stuff you need to go to PS for now. But judging from
what I have seen from the beta it will continue to be a photographers
tool.

About the WB. Unfortunately you are partly correct. There is something
odd going on with WB in some pictures with DNG files. Mostly no
problem with natural light. Mostly in fluorescent light. I have also
observed some misbehaviour at clouded days.
(Paul Steady has not seen this, but I have. Could be something with
the quality of Norwegian light).
Adobe claims that Pentax has made some mistakes with the math of the
DNG. If they are right, then I expect Pentax to fix this in a
firmware. Time will tell. Anyway. It is not a big issue.

You will be able to upgrade from 1.4 to 2.0. I have no idea where to
get it cheaper.
