Just as the other world-class confidence men have ~ a gift of gab, a 
gripping presentation (in person) and just enough home-spun truth to 
give pause to the natural skeptic.

That he was a colossal fake seems to have skipped the 
less-than-discerning minds of those just waiting for something or 
someone to follow!

He was just one more snake-oil salesman of the many this past century 
has produced.
