Vista Photo Gallery uses the same codec plugins to drives its RAW support that Windows Explorer uses to show thumbnails, so you get both when you get the codec from the camera manufacturer. MS does not handle RAW support themselves. PS Elements relies on an Adobe-sourced RAW plugin (Adobe Camera RAW) while Picasa is a monolithic app that must be updated for new RAW formats, and RAW format decoding is built directly into the app. Should Pentax release a codec for PEF to show thumbnails on Explorer, Photo Gallery will start supporting PEF's. Photo Gallery has no native file type support (Even JPEG is supported via a MS-supplied codec that's included in the base OS install). -- M.
