I've wondered myself whether the in-camera flash comp is just for the pop up. 
with my 540, I use the flash comp on the flash unit. However -1.5 or -2.0 is, 
in my experience, way too much for a strongly backlit subject. I generally go 
with -.5 or even straight up.
