Yes, a good photographer knows when the composition they're contemplating is a dead-end, and will abandon it for a something more promising. The compositions that work best tend to resolve themselves very quickly.
Less experienced photographers will worry at a picture, trying to pry out a silk purse when all that's there is a sow's ear.
