I had this same problem when I started swapping SD cards btwn the DS
and an Optio.  The much newer Optio had much higher file # than it
should have.

I was led to a program called PhotoMe (http://www.photome.de/).
Program will reveal the # of shutter actuations by reading EXIF data.
Once I figured out the values of each camera, I put a blank card in
each camera and  took one pic each.  Put the card into a card reader &
back into the PC.  After re-naming the IMGPxxxx to match the # of
shutter actuations, I put the card back in the camera and the count
started from there.  I've been careful not to swap the cards after
that.

I'd like to read what others have to say on this point if cards were
