I began when I was 14 with an SP500. I turned the focus ring until it was clear and I turned the aperture ring until the needle centered. Focusing was better and slower than with AF because I took the time to do it and kept at it until the thing I wanted in focus was clear. Exposure, OTOH, was pretty automatic unless I took the time to think beyond centering the needle. Snapshooters often don't use their cameras enough to work out the tricks of shooting pictures like compensating for back lighting. Many people want a P&S even if its a Canon 1D mark II on full auto.
