I'm no expert on the xmp files, but they call them sidecar files and have the information stored on your photo settings, like what you did in your adjustments. IIRC the file will be over written if you do more edits.
I lost a very nice IR shot, that i could not duplicate in PS, but could of had i known about the xmp files earlier.
