Don't think it would hurt to try that road. HDs have at least as long
expected lifetime as to your average CDs and DVDs. The real downside
of any HD is that if you melt it, you melt the equivalent of many
DVDs... OTOH, maintenance is simpler with HDs for the same reason;
fewer items to manage.

My own strategy is the Pooh variety; doing both... :-)  - but not all
of it, all of the time.

I have one USB attached HD for day-to-day incremental backup. Then I
have a network-attached HD located in a different part of the house to
do backup after each significant photographic event or quarterly,
whichever comes first. Then I have a few days of the week between
Christmas and New Year set off for burning DVDs of the whole vintage,
which is then stored in my parents' house. My oldest DVDs from 2003
will be renewed this year, and I'm a little bit anxious about their
readability...
