When bought mine new from Sammy's, it had the cap. Since there's so little extraneous light that will reach the lens through that small opening on the bottom, and since I use a polarizing filter a lot, I removed the little (easy to loose) tab and placed it in the box the lens came in. I don't miss it at all, and I wouldn't think of fretting over it's loss.
The DA* 16-50 is my walking around lens. I love this it, but I do wish it was lighter.
