Further research (Boz's K-mount pages) informs me that there are two
versions of M28/2.8.  I wasn't aware of the early version.  The later
version is in fact the same optical formula as the A28/2.8, and has some
similarities to A lenses unlike the early M lens which is has all the
typical M features.

Although Boz states that the M version 2 was rare, it is the version
described in the lens booklets that came with my ME Super when it was newly
purchased, and is the reason I stated that M and A versions of 28/2.8 are
optically identical.

Scott should determine which lens he is referencing.  Consult Boz is my
advice.
