hi, posting this (definitely OT) subject here in the hope that it may be of interest to those who tinker around with gps devices/google maps and the like...
during my recent ride in the himalayas i had taken a garmin gps with me (the vista hcx) and almost every day's ride was saved as tracks. had taken eight eneloop batteries to power the device (had also fixed a DC 12V cigarette lighter socket to the motorcycle battery to charge the eneloops through a DC charger). managed to keep the device powered through the 21 days of the ride... since i am on slackware, i use the following programme to put together/combine the waypoints/tracks into one single track. http://qlandkarte.sourceforge.net/. once i had a single track with the waypoints, for the first 10 days (from new delhi through lahaul and spiti to leh, the capital of ladakh district, about 1550 km, maximum altitude attained on the way, 16600 ft), i used an online facility (www.gpsvisualizer.com) to project the track on to google maps. a lot of cut & paste later, i have a rough-cut google map of the first 10 days' ride. i have a png file (about 7.7 mb) and a jpg version (1.4 mb) for those of who might want to take a peek....:-)) jpg version (1.4 mb!!): http://picasaweb.google.com/pdml.live/Etc/photo#5235403121982680194 png version (7.7 mb!!): http://picasaweb.google.com/pdml.live/Etc/photo#5235405345629675218 i am keeping the next 11 days' ride map for another lazy weekend. :-)) regards, subash -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
