Well, the crater is different every time one looks at it, depending on time of day, cloud cover and point of view. I have seen it look mostly brown and grey, and I have seen bright colors.
This was not taken from the summit or the visitor center. It was taken from the Leleiwi Overlook, which is the second overlook down from the visitor center, and is accessed by hiking about half a mile over a rough trail beginning across the road from a small parking lot. There is a small belvedere which gets one quite close to the crater itself, and affords a much different angle of view. I found it the best spot for viewing the interior of the crater.
