Hi Bob, I'll take a look at Dickens's journalism. He was obviously trying to pad in his serialized ficion. And he succeeded!
I too recommend H. G. Wells. Excellent storytelling. /The Time Machine/ is a novella, so it's a quick read, but it's fascinating and beutifully written.
