Heretical opinion to follow:
Never been a huge fan of the "Fender Sound." Too bright for me. I like
a little meat in the music, so I lean more toward the Gibson end of
the spectrum. I wouldn't, however, turn down a decent Strat or Tele if
someone bought me one.
If I were in your shoes, in addition to the Fenders (Strats and
Tele's) I'd be looking into the Epiphone line, like the Les Paul they
offer based on the "real" Les Pauls of their parent company. I'd also
check out Washburn, Ibanez, and the Paul Reed Smith models in the
general price range.
