I think a Tele is the perfect choice. The Mexi ones
are fairly well-made, too. The Tele body is good for
novices in that it's easy to play with a strap or when
sitting down, which is not the case with Strats or
other "contured" bodies.

I have a Tele I built and I play it more than my other
guitars. It has a humbucker in the bridge position to
give the guitar more crunch.

Make sure that whatever amp the Tele is played through
is well and trully grounded. Poorly grounded AC mains
will make single coil pickups, like those on a Tele,
buzz and hum.
