Ahar, I shoulda mentioned that I'm running 10.4.11. YMMV :)

The v10.5 (Leopard) Quick Look is a bit nicer, but you can do most of the same thing in 10.4 (Tiger) using the Finder's "Slide Show" command.

Select a group of photos you want to see, control-click on them and pick "Slide Show" from the popup menu. A full screen display will show them. You can control the display, show an index view, and import them into an iPhoto library right from there.

Preview allows the same functionality as well, with more controls.
