What's new... :-)

To me, a "new" shot is one where I can recall my thoughts _and_
emotional state at the moment of shooting. When selecting shots for
the family album, that's important. So important to me that I try to
have some of it reflected in added metadata (EXIF or database).
Experimental shots for learning is of course in the same category.

When selecting pics for sharing outside the family it is almost the
same, but with more weight on the technical and compositional aspects.
That's when the thought/emotion recall can get in the way of proper
judgement for me.

There's a lot of variation to how much time I need to forget my
thoughts/emotions. In some cases I can be emotionally detached at the
moment of shooting, other times I'm deeply moved. However I find it
difficult to assess the depth of involvment until the emotional memory
is gone. For this reason, I have to comb my archive several times to
extract the keepers from a more objective perspective. Sometimes I
even delete things I've extracted earlier, thinking "what the heck did
I see in this?"

And as Godfrey says too, it's also a matter of purpose; to have shots
fit into a project. I'm nowhere close to the dedication to project
workflow that Godfrey has, but it happens. Like Cotty's "project" of
retrieving pics of his old house, for example.

I think it's a complex issue. It has made me somewhat paranoid about
deleting. However I find that the more I wade through the "old" shots,
the more I learn how to weed the "new" ones. There's a lesson in the
archive about recognising potential despite the emotional clutter.
That knowledge can only be extracted from "medium matured" shots; when
distance and memory balances. My family thinks I look over my shoulder
too often, but there you go. :-)
