A nice tutorial Dough. I've never photographed razing cars, but it sounds like a lot of fun. Archived for future referense :-)
It definitely can be a lot of fun, but it can be a bit scary sometimes. For example, at the Petit le Mans a week or so ago, at one point we were in the "hot zone" at Turn 10A. At this point on track, the fastest cars were braking from nearly 300 km/hr down to maybe 80 km/hr. The slowest ones were braking from maybe 250 km/hr down to the same 80 or so km/hr. And everyone is jockeying for position at that point on the track, too. Plus, they're slowing down so they can make a sharp (~90*) left turn, followed by a shallower (~80*) right turn, fifty or so feet later. So things can get exciting with cars bouncing off each other, skidding, spinning, and running off the track into the gravel. :-) "If you can't get out of the way, JUMP!"
If you have the chance, definitely go for it. If you make it to the Southeast US at the right time of year, I'll take you to one of the local amateur races, if you want. I doubt I can get you on the hot side of the fence to shoot, but I can show you all the good spots from the spectator side.
BTW. What's the meaning of the abbreviations in your sig? besides the obvious "I'm a VIP" ;-)
Actually, that's my amateur (ham) radio call sign here. Just like broadcast radio and TV stations, amateur radio operators are assigned call signs of mixed letters and numbers, and KG4LMZ is the one they assigned to me.
