I'd never heard of Hiroshige until a few years ago, and I didn't like Japanese woodblock prints that I was familiar with, such as Hokusai, who leaves me cold. But the BBC did a show called Painting the Weather which featured Hiroshige's famous print A Sudden Shower Over Ohashe And Atake, and I was hooked. I have since learned a lot more about him, bought a number of books of his work including a reproduction of some sketchbooks. His influence on Herge is obvious (and perhaps one reason why he's so accessible to us all - everyone loves Tintin), and his influence on Van Gogh and others is well known although I never before bothered to find out the specifics of which Japanese artists were so influential in the west. I think his sketches are the equal of Rembrandt's sketches, and I think Rembrandt is one of the finest draughtsman in all art. One of the ideas I'm considering for my Fellowship of the RPS (assuming I get the Associateship with my Fez pictures) is to visit the 53 stations of the Tokaido and see what the road looks like today. Or do something in a similar vein - 80 Famous Views of Stoke-on-Trent, for example, or 36 Views of Beckton Alp (my local Mount Fuji).
