Interesting. When i had my 1DmII, i first used it with all manner of red things flashing at me in the viewfinder. It was incredibly distracting - so in the end i turned all the visual confirmation stuff off. The result was a revelation. I had the focus points set to 11 in the middle circle, no confirmation. Guess what - I used my eyes as confirmation! The AF then snapped in, and my eyes said yes - that's in focus and pop, took the pic. Occasionally (very occasionally) it would hunt. Like once when I saw a contrail heading straight for the moon in a deep blue sky. Shoulda had the thing set to MF but of course it wasn't and just at the crucial moment the AF went AWOL. Lost the shot.
