Interesting.

When i had my 1DmII, i first used it with all manner of red things
flashing at me in the viewfinder. It was incredibly distracting - so in
the end i turned all the visual confirmation stuff off. The result was a
revelation. I had the focus points set to 11 in the middle circle, no
confirmation. Guess what -  I used my eyes as confirmation! The AF then
snapped in, and my eyes said yes - that's in focus and pop, took the
pic. Occasionally (very occasionally) it would hunt. Like once when I
saw a contrail heading straight for the moon in a deep blue sky. Shoulda
had the thing set to MF but of course it wasn't and just at the crucial
moment the AF went AWOL. Lost the shot. Learned my lesson there.
