I banged up my 540 pretty good when I dropped it on a hard marble
floor. Broke the zoom mechanism and the wide angle diffuser. I sent it
to Pentax Colorado. They fixed it for about $125 and had it back to me
in about three weeks.

If you're truly worried about burning up the flash in testing, and
your repairman isn't sure, I'd make a quick call to a Pentax techie.
Good luck in getting it repaired.

That's the cover for the Infared Focus
assist light.
If not focusing in low light, you should be
fine.

Dropped my AF-540FGZ today. Smashed
the red plastic
cover over the sensors.
So, I'm not likely to burn up the flash testing
functions without the red cover in place to make sure
nothing else broke?
I think my local guy can get the part from Pentax, and
I'd rather use him if there's no OTHER damage to the
flash, since it takes such a long time for it to turn around
from Pentax. (Plus, I gotta' find where I put the box
before I can ship it back to them.)
I've got a AF-360FGZ I can use in the meantime if I
actually need the flash.
I was practicing the wireless flash with the flash
hand-held in my left hand, and dropped it while trying to
put one of those plastic bowl diffusers on it.
