It wasn't a flaw at the time, the only way to be sure those early
seats cleared the tail. The Starfighters mostly got refitted with
normal seats once a true zero/zero capable seat was invented (as those
would clear the tail at full speed as well). But the old seats at low
altitude made ejecting hairy, you had to roll inverted before
punching, while crashing.
