We did have a State-Run railroad (CNR) for a while. It never worked very well (was nationalized from several badly run railroads, then was badly run for a number of years as a state-run railroad, then was a badly run private railroad until it bought out a smaller US RR that ended up running things much better). The always-private CPR was the RR that served the country well until it decided to not be a national RR anymore about 10 years ago. -- M.
