Thanks, Godfrey.  You've confirmed what I thought Lightroom was
doing--I just wanted to be sure that I wasn't missing anything.
I do have the compression preference set, and was a little surprised
that the imported files weren't compressed.  

I guess I'll go back to .pef's.
